If you have experienced loss of hearing, a hearing aid is a great asset to helping you in your daily life. At The Hearing Doctors (ENT Associates of South Florida) located in Plantation and Coral Springs, we have come across many patients who have expressed reservations about using one as they are unsure about the price, how it works or if they will find one that functions well while being aesthetically pleasing. Due to these questions, we have decided to write this blog, where we dispel a lot of the myths that have surrounded the topic of hearing aids for quite some time.
How Do Hearing Aids Work?
Hearing devices work in the same way the human ear does. The aid contains a microchip which will collect the sounds around you and analyze it in code form. Depending on how much hearing loss you have, the chip will boost the sound depending on your needs and the volume of sounds that are in your environment. Once the hearing aid has adjusted for all of this, the information will be converted into sound waves and delivered into your ear via the small device speakers.
What Types of Hearing Aids Are Available?
Invisible-In-The-Canal: This is the style of hearing aid that is ideal if you do not want your hearing aid to be seen. The aid is placed much deeper into the ear canal than other types out on the market. The device is ideal for individuals experiencing mild to moderate hearing loss.
The aid will be custom made according to the shape of your inner ear, thus this is an option that while “invisible” to the naked eye, can cost slightly more.
Completely-In-The-Canal: This style is also custom designed to fit deep inside of the ear canal, and is ideal for mild to moderate hearing loss just like the invisible-in-the-canal hearing aid. The only difference is that a small plastic tip that functions as a handle of sorts to remove and insert the device is visible.
In-The-Canal: This style of hearing aid is custom made to fit snugly in the ear canal with a portion showing in the outer ear. An array of colors are available to match your skin tone as closely as possible. This hearing device is ideal for an individual suffering from mildly severe hearing loss.
Receiver In The Canal: This discreet type of design utilizes a speaker that is placed inside the ear canal (barely visible), and thin, transparent, electrical wires, rather than tubing, to connect it to the rest of the device which is small and sit behind the ear. This aid is ideal for individuals experiencing mild to moderate hearing loss.
In The Ear: This hearing instrument is ideal for mild to severe hearing loss. The aid is custom made to fit in the outer portion of the ear. A variety of colors are available to help you select the color that most closely resembles your skin tone.
Behind The Ear: The hearing aid is placed directly behind the ear with this style of device. A clear tube connects this to a custom earbud which is resting inside the ear. This type of aid is recommended for individuals experiencing moderate to severe hearing loss.
