What is CANVAS Syndrome and how is it treated?

CANVAS is the acronym for Cerebellar ataxia with neuropathy and bilateral vestibular areflexia syndrome and means that there is an impairment in various systems of your body that include balance. A symptom of this syndrome is being visually impaired. If you feel that your vision is progressively decreasing, you need to visit a doctor at The Hearing Doctors (ENT Associates of South Florida) right away! It is important that before your symptoms persist, you have the diagnosis and a treatment plan in place. CANVAS Syndrome can completely impair your hearing and vision. It can happen very progressively so you have to make sure that you are seeing a doctor. The last thing you want is to start losing the strength in your senses and eventually your balance. The sooner you see a professional who can diagnose your impairment, the better off you will be in the long run. When a treatment plan is implemented early on, your chances of a better quality life are very high. If you have hearing problems, you might need to look into hearing aids.

CANVAS Syndrome

Luckily, it is a very rare syndrome to have. Not many people have reported the combination of VA and CA, however it is not impossible to find these situations which is why it is important to discuss possible treatment options. The chances of you developing this syndrome are slim to none but if you do, you will experience a lot of balance issues and may lose your hearing and vision or they will decrease drastically. In a case study of 20,000 people, only 5 were diagnosed with CANVAS syndrome. This syndrome is a combination of three different imbalances that cause your vision and hearing loss.

How Is It Treated?

There is no need to worry too much if you are experiencing hearing or vision issues. One way to treat hearing loss is with hearing aids which may be very beneficial to you. There are very minimal treatment options for this rare disorder because it is not found in many patients. The treatment is symptomatic and you will need assistive devices because you have 3 impediments to balance. Our doctors at The Hearing Doctors (ENT Associates of South Florida) advise people with CANVAS Syndrome to see a doctor right away! The treatment options are not home remedies so do not try and treat your CANVAS Syndrome by yourself.
